Venue: English Heritage, Stokesey Castle, Ludlow.
Where: Ludlow, Shropshire. SY7 9AH
What's on offer:
Stokesay Castle is said to be one of the finest and best preserved 13th-century fortified manor house in England. It offers visitors a unique glimpse into a distant age, when strength and elegance were combined. It is set amid the peaceful countryside near the Welsh border and Stokesay Castle forms an outstandingly picturesque group with its timber-framed gatehouse and the parish church.
Across the courtyard stands the truly delightful gatehouse, an elaborate example of the regional style of lavishly showy timber-framing, with charming carvings of Adam and Eve. This was built in 1640, a few years before Stokesay's only known military encounter, when it surrendered without fighting during the Civil War.You can also go on an audio tour which will help you to imagine Stokesay as the centre of medieval life.
The grounds include cottage-style gardens, a tearoom open from April to October, and a gift shop.
Throughout the year the castle also offers reenactment days which are also great fun. If you call the above number you can find out when these days are held.

Review:
The castle is situated on the A49 Ludlow/Shrewsbury Road. It belongs to English Heritage, so it is reasonably priced.
On our visit we were lucky enough to go on a re-enactment weekend, so there was a lot going on. All the rooms had people in their period costumes and were all able to answer any questions we had. We chose to go around with the audio guide.
Stokesey has a tearoom and shop, which sells souvenirs and various wines. In addition, Stokesay Court the late Victorian mansion which is set in attractive parkland was featured in the film Atonement' which starred Keira Knightley.
This is definitely a good half-day visit and just up the road is Church Stretton, a nice little town with some great walks and picnic areas.Reviewed by Nicky Jones
