Pupils look forward to film, fashion and plays

FILMS, fashion and plays will be on the cards for children in a special day this week.

Children at the Blessed Edward Oldcorne Catholic College will be going offtimetable on Thursday to allow all the pupils to spend time experiencing learning that cannot usually be managed in hour-long lessons.

Pupils will be working in groups focusing on one area throughout the day looking at it with teachers from different subject areas in different ways.

Rebekah Hodson, who initiated this day, said: “It is a totally different way of learning.

“We are all very excited about not having the usual time constraints and being able to share expertise.”

Some year seven pupils will be involved in putting on a short play in the newly built college amphitheatre.

Pupils can choose to act, make props or create advertising materials including web-based adverts.

The play will be shown at the end of the day.

Other year seven pupils will spend the day thinking about how we learn and how to improve their own learning. They will be using film making, photography and role plays and will create a resource for the whole school to use afterwards.

Year eight pupils are looking at fashion abroad.

The day will culminate in a fashion show. All of the commentary is in French and pupils will be wearing costumes they have created themselves during the day.

Other year eight pupils will focus on energy. They will be using up their own energy in the multi-gym and calculating the amount of energy needed to carry out the activities.

Then pupils will be in the science labs experimenting with different foods to find how much energy there is in each.

The MARRC (Motion Analysis Research Rehabilitation Centre) bus from the University of Worcester will be in the college grounds to look at how the body moves in different activities.

Year nine will be thinking about other people in two ways. Some are considering Fairtrade and will be playing a game that shows the injustice of world trade practices.

They will also be working with Fairtrade products and designing displays.

Headteacher Sean Devlin said: “The day will provide a wonderful learning experience for pupils outside the box. A great deal of time and effort in preparing for this day has been spent by Rebekah Hodson and all teachers.

“It is intended that this day becomes an established part of the college curriculum in every year”.
