A CROWN court judge has praised pupils from schools across Worcestershire for their performances in this year’s mock trials competition.
Teams of pupils from 12 schools – including Worcester’s Blessed Edward Oldcorne Catholic College and Nunnery Wood High School, the Chase Technology College in Malvern and Tenbury High School – took part in the event at Worcester Crown Court on Saturday.
Pupils played the parts of magistrates, prosecution and defence lawyers, defendant, witnesses and court officials, and their performances were judged by local magistrates and other legal professionals. The winners and runners-up were later presented with their prizes by Judge Alistair McCreath.
Students from Aston Fields Middle School, Bromsgrove, won the team cup as overall winners and also took the trophy for the best student bench of magistrates. They also provided one of the individual winners with George Roberts, who played the role of legal adviser, sharing the prize for outstanding student.
Judge McCreath said: “I watched many of the students in action. They were all fantastic. It is a very difficult thing to perform in public and they all did extremely well. They have learned something about the British legal system and some things about themselves and they appear to have had fun in the process. Perhaps taking part in this competition has helped some of these students to decide on a future career in the law.”
Now in its 16th year, the annual schools mock trial contest is organised by the Citizenship Foundation in partnership with the Magistrates’ Association, supported by the Ministry of Justice.
