We’re marking our first two years in community

THE city’s first Polish school has been celebrating two years since lessons began.

The John Paul Polish Saturday School opened in March 2008 and has gone from strength to strength.

The school, which was set up with the help of south Worcestershire police division, now has about 60 four to 17-year-olds attending.

Language, culture and history lessons have all proven to be popular among the youngsters.

The school, which was originally based at Christopher Whitehead Language College in Worcester, recently moved to St Mary’s Convent School in Battenhall. Headteacher Monika Wakula said she was absolutely thrilled that the school was celebrating its second birthday.

She said: “I am so happy that the school is such a success and that it has been welcomed into the community.

“Looking back over the past two years, we have achieved such a lot with the support of the community, police, councils and, of course, the parents who personally fund and run the school.

“Special thanks need to go to St Mary’s Convent, which has been fantastic in providing a place for the children to learn and for providing overall support. The children love coming here and those who have been prepared for and taken GCSE and A-level exams have all gained great results.

“We are now all looking forward to another great year.”

Chief Inspector Helena Bennett, of West Mercia Police, speaks fluent Polish and has been involved in the setting up of the school and its ongoing success.

She praised the hard work of everyone involved in the school and said: “Projects such as this benefit communities as a whole.”
