A Great Problem!

Monday 10th November Severn Trent Water hosted a STEM day (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) at Specialist Science College, Tenbury High School.

Severn Trent recognises the chronic national shortage of engineers and provided the course for 50 Year 9 students to experience engineering problem solving.

Retired engineer and University Lecturer Dennis Perry, of the Smallpeice Trust quickly fired the students’ imaginations.

During the day students constructed and tested 7 working wind turbines and measured the electricity produced.

Severn Trent generously provided 2 fantastic prizes of 3-day residential courses with the Royal Navy, Royal Air Force or LandRover/Jaguar.

The only drawback to this highly successful day was that Dennis found it difficult to pick only 2 winners.

Darrell Wood (Head of Science at Tenbury High School) said “We are now negotiating with Severn Trent to see if we may purchase more residential days. The day has certainly fired the students’ interest and we would love to see something similar again in the future. I would strongly recommend the event to other schools”
