TWO students from the University of Worcester’s institute of sport and exercise science have won prestigious prizes.
MSc sports coaching science student Christian Edwards, who is also a teaching assistant at the University of Worcester, and third year sports science student Mel White, won two of the six available national awards.
The BASES Student Conference provides an invaluable opportunity for students to present their own work, to share ideas and thoughts with others, and find out what other sport and exercise science undergraduate and postgraduate students are up to.
Mr Edwards, aged 23, of Malvern, won the Best Postgraduate Poster Award for his presentation on ‘Relationships among muscle dysmorphia, appearance schema processing, body image disturbance, and activating events’.
“It was a great achievement to win and I was really delighted,” he said.
“But the real achievement was that we had nine students from the University of Worcester who presented and we took home two of the six prizes.”
Mrs White, 32, from the Tything, Worcester, won the Best Undergraduate Poster Award.
She presented a poster on ‘Effects of compression tights on physiological parameters in a submaximal steady state and maximal run’.
She said: “I was really shocked but pleased to have won this award.
“It’s great to get some recognition for your work.”
The other University of Worcester students who presented at the conference included PhD student Ashley Routen and sport and exercise science students Grace Muzavazi, Rhian Hughes, Mykolas Kavaliauskas, Tim Gurney and Kyle Goggin.
Mick Donovan, head of the institute of sport and exercise science, said: “It is a real testament to the department and the university to have nine students present their work, with two winning awards.”
