SCHOOL pupils in Worcester are benefiting from a new programme which is the first of its kind in the country.
Sports students from the University of Worcester are helping local schoolchildren access a six-week free programme of afterschool sports and physical activities.
The multisports programme is a joint venture between the city council and the university and involves 30 sports coaching students visiting 17 schools.
Liam Hughes, sports development officer at Worcester City Council, said: “This is a fantastic programme which aims to give children the opportunity to experience a variety of different sports as well as acting as coach development for sports students in their academic studies at the University of Worcester.
“It’s a great example of partnership working for the benefit of the community and we are particularly proud of the fact that it is the first such programme of its kind to be introduced in the UK.”
Mick Donovan, head of the Institute of Sport at the University of Worcester, said: “We have been developing the skills and understanding of our students within sports coaching for many years.
“This is a great initiative and gives the students the opportunity to apply their knowledge, which will be of great benefit for youngsters throughout the city.”
This year’s programme runs until Christmas after which it will become an annual event.
It is hoped the programme will grow to include all Droitwich and Worcester schools and local sports clubs.
