Uni work earns top safety award

NEW halls of residence at the University of Worcester have been awarded a prestigious Secured by Design status.

The police initiative supports the principles of ‘designing out crime’.

In planning and designing the new halls at St John’s and Castle Street, now home to more than 350 students, the university and its designers thought carefully about how safe it would be for students arriving home late at night and ensured any possible unsafe spots were designed out.

Thought also went into where doors and windows were positioned, how the external planting schemes worked, giving privacy but not a safe haven for potential thieves.

The scheme went further still, with all the door locks and windows being fully tested to make sure they were certified to a high security standard.

Chief Inspector Jerry Reakes-Williams, head of local policing in south Worcestershire, said: “High quality window and door locks, CCTV and swipe-card access are just some of the measures in place to reduce crime and ensure the students feel safe.”
