Rowers on course to smash records

UNIVERSITY rowers on course to smash world records have had a welcome boost from a pair of Worcester Warriors and the city mayor.

Male and female teams from the University of Worcester are trying to smash the longest continual rowing world records by rowing day and night at CrownGate Shopping Centre.

As your Worcester News went to press yesterday, the women’s team was less than 100km away from setting the first of the three world records being attempted and the men’s team was moving ahead of world record pace.

Yesterday, the Mayor of Worcester Andy Roberts and Worcester Warriors players Earl Collins and Andy Short gave a boost to the teams.

Organiser John Maxwell went head-to-head with Short in a 100-metre challenge, with the Warrior winning by 0.1 of a second.

Mr Maxwell said: “Any other Warriors, Wolves, Worcester Football Club players or Worcestershire cricketers who fancy trying their hand against a rower – you know where to find us.”

The women’s world record for one million metres was set to be broken at about 11pm last night. The men’s team was nearly 100km ahead of the world record pace. Mr Maxwell said: “Special mention should go to Rhys Paul – who has been blasting away at the top of the order. The distance each rower travels during their hour-long stint is recorded and Rhys currently holds first, second, third, fourth and fifth furthest efforts!”

Money raised will go to Worcester Snoezelen. To donate, visit row4charity.org.
