Spring Weather Part 1 The Vernal Equinox or the Official start of Spring (around 21st March) often comes in with varied and sometimes cold conditions. The transitional period between the retreating winter and advancing spring is very often fickle, unpredictable and mixed, so the British Isle frequently experience several weather types within any particular week, and sometimes within a 24 hour period.
The wind regularly changes it's direction, blowing warm and then cold. The first part of spring can bring sudden snow storms especially to the upland locations, just when the young lambs are being born, the sheep farmers called these periods " the Lambing Storms ". Cold lashing rain, hail, sleet and snow can all be logged, although some springs are warm and dry with light winds. Late frost can also be expected which is not very good news for gardeners and growers alike.
The first thunderstorms of the season can be expected especially during the period mid April through to late May. At the end of winter and start of spring the North Sea and Atlantic Ocean is at its coldest, so often high pressure builds over the central Atlantic, winds blow around high in a clockwise direction, so this is why we frequently experience cold north to north-west winds during this period bringing the characteristic April showers.
