Meteorologically speaking, the three summer months are June, July and August. After two consecutive wet summers, Mother Nature will be desperately trying to balance her books. We are due for a cluster of improved summers and after such a cold winter (the coldest for over a decade), the spring and summer which follow such winter weather are normally reasonable.
We will experience some very warm fine spell during spring 2009 with some nice spells of weather throughout the summer period. Although the month of June is often named "flaming June" in most years the month is very changeable and cool, with the occasional hot spell thrown in during some years. In June 1976 before the long hot scorching summer set in, many parts of the UK logged sleet and snow showers during the early days of the month.
During my 50 years of taking climatic observations, I have witnessed a handful of hot June's. When they arrive temperatures soar to between 28 and 30 degrees Celsius. The highest temperatures often occur during the period 7-14th of June and again 23rd June-7th July. A cooler mixed spell sometimes set in during the middle section of the month.
