Summer Weather Part Three

As we move into August the we often experience some muggy very warm days, many regard August as the thunderstorm month with plenty of heat and moisture within the atmosphere to fuel some high level severe thunderstorms, usually they build and burst forth between 4pm and 10pm, fading away overnight as the heat of the day eases away.

Heat haze becomes so thick during such summer hot spells that the base of the storm is hidden, often building and expanding from the middle layer of the atmosphere. Once the heat and moisture is forced to rise into colder unstable air above, those thunder heads grow rapidly upward, creating an anvil shape at the top of the cumulonimbus cloud. Torrential downpours cause flash flooding and is accompanied by hail and squally winds which lash the landscape.

The down drafts from the parent storm lifts the air immediately around it, creating more thunderstorm cells. Through the hours of darkness during these thundery conditions, each individual storm cell can be seen complete with lightning discharge, so the sky is lit up in every direction.

Lightning releases nitrogen into the atmosphere, Mother Nature then washes it to earth. After a thundery spell, the plant life, especially the meadows, pastureland and lawns look replenished and much greener.
