Many businesses are weather dependent and rely on certain weather types to make their money. In a poor rainy summer it's the umbrella and rain gear companies which come out trumps, but in sunny warm summers the sale of patio sets, ice cream, soft drinks and salads are sold in vast numbers.

Many superstores require accurate weather forecasts to be ahead of what to order.

Gardeners and nurseries need updated weather forecast especially during spring when the young bedding plants are hardening off, before they can be sold off to the public in general.

Racecourses need to have information on the amount of rainfall which will descend upon their courses ahead of race meetings, the transpiration and evaporation rates are also very important.

Hot air balloonists require accurate weather data for safe flying due to the fact that they rely purely on the wind to steer their course. Data extending through the atmosphere is important for these balloonists with the gradient wind and inversion information also needed.

The environmental and emergency services need to know when adverse weather conditions are expected, especially when heavy rain is due which could cause flooding in certain areas. Strong winds can also cause havoc, so the wind speed is very important. The climate affects many businesses, but can also prove to be a life saver for some.

During the long hot summer of 1976, mowers became redundant and the water authorities introduced standpipes. The extremely high temperatures created high fire risk within the countryside, fire services where very busy throughout that summer. Without often knowing it, the life which goes on around us, is influenced very much by the weather. Next time you enter a superstore, note the weather conditions and notice how the items on sale reflect that climatic condition. Soft drinks, ice cream, barbecue sets and materials will be promoted and stocked high when the weather is sunny and warm.
