As we move into December, the weather can be extremely stormy with heavy persistent rain causing flooding. As I mentioned in onset of winter part 1, we often experience the first real sharp frost of winter during this month. In past years a cold frosty period can set in early in the month and linger almost up until Christmas due to blocking anticyclones. When the milder Atlantic air filters in, a brief spell of snow may occur, especially in higher locations.
A White Christmas is a very rare in Worcestershire and in most years, we experience wet mild windy spells of weather around Christmas. Stormy winds off the Atlantic can blast in with severe gales in parts, especially around our northern, western and southern coastlines. High spring tides, coupled with strong winds causing storm surges can bring coastal flooding, especially when a very deep storm system is involved, beneath low pressure air rises and that can also raise the sea level up by as much as 3 metres.
Next Week: Onset of Winter Part 3
Glossary: Depression: A region of low atmospheric pressure also called a low or cyclone. Depressions usually bring low cloud, wind and precipitation.
