Like many of the youth of today, when I look back at what my mum used to dress me in, I tend to cringe. The 1990’s was defiantly not the best year for fashion.
One of the main fashion trends was the ‘Grunge Look.’ It was very popular to go out of the house looking like you have just rolled out of bed. Many people grew their hair long, and kept it greasy, to fit in with this look. Music was a very big influence of this look, as bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam and The Melvins. The overall grunge look, was baggy jeans, a band t-shirts and flannel shirts.
Another look in the 90’s was Denim. Denim was very popular in the 90’s but not as you see it today. The bigger and more colourful the jeans, the cooler they were. Baggy jeans were made famous by hip hop stars, and coloured jeans in red, green or indigo were seen on every '90s kid. Also popular, were overalls/dungarees , which could be worn in two ways - hooking one strap and letting the other hang open, or unhooking both straps and wearing a belt to keep them from falling off.
Platform shoes were very big in the 90’s, and were seen on almost every teenager. Platform trainers, Doc Martins and Mary Janes all elevated your height, by adding more layers of rubber to the soles. Doc Martins were defiantly the most popular shoes. All teenagers, whether they were into hip hop or grunge, wore them to complete there outfit.
My most treasured item from the 90’s has got to be my jelly shoes. I lived in them. They were great, I could wear them wherever and whenever, with out a care in the world. You could wear them on a beach, and go in the water with them on, and then go play in the sand afterwards, which is something you can’t do in many pairs of shoes nowadays. Jelly shoes were so versatile. I think deep down, every 90’s child loved their Jellies.
