DETROIT’S
Castle Street, Worcester.

PUT your hands up for Detroit, the chorus of the classic dance track tells us, but does Worcester’s new American diner get the thumbs up for a meal out with friends on a Saturday night?

The former car showroom in Castle Street has been magically transformed into an authentic 1950s US eatery and after it opened earlier this year I had been eager to get involved.

However, booking a table wasn’t straightforward because I couldn’t find a telephone number on the internet.

Eventually, I found a Facebook page that had a number and booked a table for four.

Once there, the attention to detail is very impressive.

Posters of classic American movies and cult heroes are montaged across the walls, the booths have stripy leather seats and the waitresses look like extras from the set of Happy Days.

If Pulp Fiction was set in Worcester, Uma Thurman and John Travolta would have been dining here. With no five-dollar shakes on the menu I opted for a pint of draught lager (£3.30) which was superb and my girlfriend went for a cocktail (£4). Her friend ordered a bottomless Coke which was cracking value at £1.90.

The menu at Detroit’s is concise but has a great selection of burgers and steaks... and our waitress must have asked us if we needed more drinks at least four times before we were ready to order. I know there’s nothing worse than being sat with an empty glass but it was like she was on a two-minute timer.

To start we went for the Drive-In (£11.90) which was overflowing with tender chunks of boneless chicken, tasty prawns, stuffed peppers, mushrooms, garlic bread, wedges and salad – ideal to share between four.

There was then a long wait for our main courses and it meant we were asked about drinks at least another 10 times. It was getting difficult to keep a straight face. When our burgers arrived – two Jerry Lee Lewis half pounders (£10.70) one Veg-o-Rama (£8.70) and a Grace Kelly chicken burger (£9.90) – they were generously sized and needed cutting in half.

I have no hesitation in saying the Jerry Lee Lewis was the best burger I’ve had anywhere in Worcester. The beef was juicy and cooked to perfection in a fresh toasted bun.

The chicken and veggie burgers also received high praise but we were all in agreement that the fries, definitely not chips, were limp and a bit cold.

For dessert, blueberry cheesecake with ice cream was divine but lemon heaven mousse didn’t hit the God spot.

In all we had a really enjoyable evening – the positives far out weighed the negatives.

If Detroit’s can iron out a few creases there is no reason why it shouldn’t be a success. I’m already looking forward to tackling a steak on my next visit.

Hooray a fair and unbiased review of Detroit’s (much better than the nearby residents 'possibly' posting fake ones!!) well done Mr Savage. We went and enjoyed it to, like you say the attention to detail in the decor is great, agreed the burgers are superb :- )

Why would anyone hesitate to declare something the "best burger I've had anywhere in Worcester"? It's hardly the burger capital of the world. Talk about damning with faint (sic) praise; or was that line there for comedy's sake?

Mr Savage must be the first person I have spoken to that has had a good meal at this restaurant. I hope that this is a sign of real improvement as Worcester needs something new. However, looking at the recent reviews on Trip Adviser I suspect that he was just lucky. I for one would need a lot of convincing before I returned.

I see the nerds of easy row still have nothing better to do than post reviews detracting from this new and consistently busy restaurant. Oh and youv been doing it on trip advisor as well how wonderful. Everyone knows you were crying into your caviar when it planning permission as you preferred the closed down garage. MR Savage has given a true review of the restaurant unlike the moaner above everyone I have spoken to has had nothing but positive comments.

Oh and just for info iv placed a true and factual review on trip advisor and also written to trip advisor about the fact the majority of reviews are from new users and that the restaurant is being unfairly targeted by a group of moaning miserable residents who preferred it when it was a derelict car lot. Obviously that’s just opinion but I thought id give the place at least a fair shot, i cant stand petty small minded bumpkins!!!

Having visited the diner in the past month with a group of friends, none of us could agree with the article. Clearly it's a matter of taste, but what we got for what we paid was dire.

One of the party is a qualified chef with significant experience and success at working in similar establishments to the diner.

Simply put, in our opinion the food was poor, and the customer service the worst we have experienced in a restaurant in many years!

A visit to Detroit's is not something any of us would want to repeat in a hurry.

Before you visit the diner, my advice is to Google it since the reviews speak for themselves!

Great idea, fabulous layout, but poor execution. Shame.

MR H Marks - calm down dear ! you would appear to be the one being small minded and a bit nerdish by assuming that anyone that complains about the experience they have had is a disgruntled resident.

I know this statement to be totally inaccurate as I live 5 miles away !

I actually said that I hoped it had improved as I think Worcester needs something new.

Maybe those new Trip Advisors were so disappointed by their experience at Detroits they were driven to write a review about it. (or is this just a sweeping statement like the ones you have made).

Why out of 10 reviews are only 2 positive ? If it is so good then why don't more people shout about it ?

I don't personally mind either way, I hope they make a success of their restaurant. I just fear that unless they make some changes we will see another empty and derelict retail outlet.

Its of no surprise that a group of never before registered commentators register with the WN and comment on nothing else apart from this particular restaurant?! im sure people who read the website will not be fooled by your supposedly truthful comments. Its also totally suspicious that no other restaurant review receives quite so much attention. Don’t worry abut me im as calm as a Spanish E-coli cucumber, as mentioned above small minded people with nothing better to do get on my wick, so iv taken some time just to make sure the restaurant at least gets a fair shot. As im sure the detractors would love to see it shut down. looking forward to when it gets its late night licence party heart dudes :-)

Perhaps this could be evidence of how strongly these people feel!

I have contacted the diner 4 times with a complaint regarding our visit and they have yet to respond!

Small minded? No! Incensed? definitely.

Totally agree peter it certainly is evidence, its hardly a tenuous link to say that these same people could also be the ones who campaigned to stop the restaurant opening, descended on the guild hall to put forward their little petition (bless their cotton socks), then tried to stop the restaurant being granted an alcohol licence then complained that their drains wouldn’t be able to cope with any extra use the list goes on and gets more laughable as it does. So yep id totally agree its definitely evidence that something fishy is going on regarding the negative comments from never before registered users?!. I can count 10+ other restaurants that have opened in Worcester recently none of which have suffered such petty vindictive comments as this one its shameful as if it does shut down that will mean job losses, all sounds very odd doesn’t it?!. Anyway every night I walk past its packed so they must be doing something right.

It certainly seems strange that this restaurant has attracted so many comments when the norm is one or two, and there was considerable opposition from local residents prior to it opening.
I intend trying it out at some stage, but I have to say I`ve often been disappointed with pseudo American Diners - they do it so much better in the States.

Well, I haven't visited it and while I have nothing against it I probably won't because it's not my type of place, for the same reasons given by Doogie. However, I wish they would do something with the landscaping - it looks like a car park that's being used as a lumber yard at present. It is an eyesore.
Can I recommend some planters, perhaps with specimen trees in?

Detroits is, put simply, one of the best places I have ever eaten. The service is first class, the girls that work there try ever so hard and are very friendly. The food is out of this world, with huge portions and of a real high quality. You can taste the freshness. The local residents who opposed it were wrong, Detroit's is a friendly, vibrant place that is a credit to it's owner and all who work there. I'd go a lot more if I could afford it!

Wow, just read some of the comments above and I must say I'm SHOCKED! it sounds like a act of sabotage from a mid summer murder script! My husband is American and since detroits oppened, earlier this year, we've hardly eaten anywhere else. I would say for a family restaurant it gives a good variety of tasty, value, decent sized portions. This is also the only kind of american themed restaurant for around 20 miles, just a shame they dont have a late night license for when the kids arent with you. Tomorrow night we will be sampling New Years Eve dinner and dance there with a live American band, cant wait. No where else offers that kind of entertanment for the whole family.
