BEING quite a fan of sushi, it was a welcome sight to see Double Sushi open its doors in the city back in December.

So when the opportunity arose to review the restaurant, I made sure I was at the head of the queue. Upon arrival, my friend and I felt instantly welcomed, which was definitely aided by the offer of hot drinks on a bitterly cold evening.

There was a crisp, fresh feel to the modern and minimalist decor and the feeling was completed by a soundtrack of relaxing instrumental tunes.

Having supped a green tea and a coffee, we made our selections from the colourful menu and plumped for the miso soup (£2.10) to start. It was the perfect size and weight to get things under way, mixing light tofu and crispy spring onions.

This was quickly followed by a pick and mix selection of sushi, including gunkan and nigiri varieties, with the option of ordering more if our appetites so dictated. As it was, we both went on to demolish a good number of pieces each and realised our eyes were bigger than our bellies.

There was a good selection of hot and cold, spicy and mild options, with the added bonus of seeing them handcrafted from scratch behind the front counter.

The menu boasts more than 30 different options, ranging from the simple avocado maki to the shrimp hosouramaki with black sesame, shrimp, cream cheese, cucumber and avocado.

The duo of avocado with karai sauce (£2.40 for two) and shrimp with karai sauce (£2.40 for two) provided a fiery but oddly light kick, while the mini tuna with black and brown sesame seeds, tomato, cucumber and mayo (£5.90 for six) proved to be a cool and juicy alternative.

Although not strictly sushi, the highlight of our choices came in the form of chicken katsu (£4.90) The freshly cooked and succulent fried chicken in breadcrumbs provided a different taste sensation.

All of this came with sides of soy sauce for salty seasoning, pickled ginger for added tang and wasabi to make the tongue tingle.

The bill came in at a shade over £22, which makes it suited to the pockets of a younger audience or simply those wanting a quick and healthy bite to eat.

The service was polite, friendly and amusing throughout and not in the slightest bit pushy, making you feel welcome and able to choose at your leisure.

Leaving the restaurant full and content, we were already planning our next visit.
