FANS of the Levellers can enjoy an up close and personal performance with the English rock band when they come to Malvern later this month.

The band is set to appear at Malvern Theatres on Friday, January 31, where a special screening of the new Levellers documentary will be shown.

The documentary, A Curious Life, will be followed by a live acoustic performance of the band's greatest hits, including Beautiful Day, the Boatman and Another Man's Cause.

Told through the perspective of Jeremy Cunningham, the band’s bass player and artist, and directed by former Chumbawamba frontman Dunstan Bruce, the film focuses on the Levellers success between 1988 and 1998 before the band nearly disintegrated in a train wreck of drink, drugs and creative drought.

Despite reaching their lowest ebb, the band never split up and after a few years later they re-invented themselves as a self-managing collective with their own studio, label and Beautiful Days festival.

Dunstan described the documentary as "funny and heart-warming".

He said: “It is a potted journey through 25 years of subsidised dysfunctionalism and an uplifting tale of battling demons that reminds us that behind every band there is a story of struggle for expression, acceptance and survival."

The show starts at 7.30pm.
