THE healing power of music will heal any hurt feelings following the EU referendum, at the Ale House in Colwall.

A Severn Voices concert called "Euro-madrigals" will entertain Remainers and Brexiteers alike, on Friday, June 24, from 7.30pm.

A spokesman said: "When all is said and done, we will still be a medium sized island off the coast of Europe, and our cultural ties with Europe remain.

"This concert was going to be called 'midsummer madrigals' however on reflection, we had to draw attention to our Euro-dependence when it comes to these choral songs from the late 16th century."

The spokesman added: "The madrigal came over the Alps from Italy, but once established in the UK this immigrant art form became so much admired that native composers like William Byrd and Thomas Wilbye could then use words in English and add their own peculiar genius and make it a totally English variant. So most of our programme is 'home-grown' but we are pleased to include some classic French and Italian madrigals too."

There will be choral arrangements of lute songs by the Jacobean Morrissey, John Dowland, whose motto was "always miserable, always Dowland", with or without a Jacobean hearing aid.

The spokesman said: "Not that our programme is going to be miserable. Quite the contrary - we have a section devoted to birds, and two madrigals replete with bird noises. Now, what more could one want to get over post-referendum blues?"
