HAMLET is one of Shakespeare’s best plays. The Globe is, well, Shakespeare’s theatre. To have both in Worcester is, quite frankly, exciting.

And that’s exactly what’s happening during the Three Choirs Festival in August: two performances of Hamlet by the Globe Theatre’s touring company.

Critics have raved about the production, which has already completed a stint at the Globe, which has been described as “wonderfully engrossing” and “fresh, fast and lucid”.

Directed by Dominic Dromgole, it stars up-and-coming actor Joshua McGuire who, while you may not recognise his name, it is more than likely some will recognise his face.

The 23-year-old has already had parts in the BAFTA award-winning Misfits, the Eastenders online spin-off E20 and now, The Hour - the BBC’s hotly anticipated new drama.

“I had classical training at RADA,” he explained. “I guess those three things are what I people are going to perhaps know me for. I guess that’s the joy of being an actor. One day you’re Hamlet, the next day a superhero.”

But right now, playing the Danish prince is his focus.

“It is a privilege to play the role,” said McGuire. “Especially at the Globe. It’s really, really great.

“To be able to play Hamlet at the beginning of my career is amazing - it is almost a part ticked off, not that there’s a list.”

And by all accounts, it is a great performance he gives - a slightly different one from the run of older Hamlets the stage has seen recently.

But what can the audience expect apart from a strong lead?

“They can expect a truly honest telling of Shakespeare’s play,” McGuire enthused. “It’s cut down, but it is not to its detriment - it’s got a nice pace to it. It is quite an energetic show.”
