Rodgers & Hammerstein's musical The Sound of Music is celebrating its 50th anniversary since it hit the big screen I was 11 back in the day when I was taken to see it. What strikes me now is I have watched the film several times since and tonight is the fifth stage production.

You know the story, you know the plot, the fabulous music, the words to most of the songs so what is the attraction? It is pure joy - Maria, the adorable Von Trapp children who performed immaculately, the nuns and 15 minutes in you're hooked!

There are a couple of changes from the film the addition of two new songs involving Elsa and Max, however, what has happened to I Have Confidence?

Maria played by Jessica Daley a former contestant on BBC's Over The Rainbow who was placed 5th was self assured growing in confidence throughout the performance, there was a warmth and affection between her and the children.

Star of the show is Jan Hartley as the Mother Abbess who brought the end of the first act to a close with a spine tingling rendition of Climb Ev'ry Mountain that had the hairs on the back of my neck stand up - it was worthy of a standing ovation.

Stunning sets, a full orchestra, the abbey scenes, the chorus of nuns, Maria and the children were some of my favourite things.

The hills are alive in Bristol until Saturday, 4th July.
