THE smash hit musical Mamma Mia based on the songs of ABBA commenced its first nationwide tour opening in Bristol on Friday, 25th March. I was at Tuesday's press night that was also attended by the creator and producer Judy Craymer and Bristol based Catherine Johnson writer of the book.

Like millions of people I know the songs, have watched the film many times, however I am ashamed to say I had not seen the stage production - what a show, sheer enjoyment, amazing cast even though there are no star names.

Lucy May Barker (Sophie) excelled, naive and affectionate very cool as the 20 year old bride to be who invites three men to her wedding from her Mum's past 20 years ago in a mission to find her father. Sara Poyzer (Donna) has brought Sophie up by herself on an idyllic Greek island where she owns a small hotel.

Donna as mother of the bride has invited her two life long friends who were also from her band Donna & the Dynamos, larger than life Rosie (Jacqueline Braun) who has her feet on the ground, what you see is what you get - she was fabulous, one of the many highlights was her version of Take A Chance On Me which brought the house down she made you smile throughout and Tanya affluent, a man eating divorcee who was immensely amusing with great comic timing, her rendition of Does Your Mother Know is great fun.

There are so many wonderful moments throughout the entire show especially the boys doing a great dance routine wearing flippers, and the stunning performance by Donna, Rosie and Tanya of Dancing Queen and Super Trouper complete in their full ABBA outfits.

They say less is more-  the simplistic stage set and incredible lighting proved that.

Colourful costumes, excellent choreography, a live band and the amazing cast ended the show with an ABBA party, everyone on their feet 'having the time of their lives' for a well deserved standing ovation.

If you have not got your tickets already do so now you will not be disappointed Mamma Mia runs until Saturday, 7th May at the Bristol Hippodrome.
