He may be famous for his “grouchy” demeanour, but Rich Hall ensured there were smiles all round when he performed at Huntingdon Hall last night.
The Montana native targeted everything from the British weather to terrorism to Primark during the two-and-a-half hour show.
Hall’s seemingly unscripted style - as though he’s simply telling you whatever pops into his head - makes for some seriously hilarious musings.
For the first half we were treated to Hall’s observations of the English compared to his American brethren, politics and wedded bliss, but my favourite part of the show came in the second half when Hall “tinkled the ivories” on his keyboard and picked up his guitar and sang.
He was even joined on stage by his band – a bassist, who also provided backing vocals, and a drummer.
As is to be expected, the audience and in this instance those in the front row, were in the firing line and the subject of Hall’s songs.
There was the couple who had been dating for two years but have no immediate plans to wed, even when presented with a ring by Hall himself.
Then there was Ian, a service co-ordinator, who had the very first song ever written about a service co-ordinator performed by Hall in his honour.
All in all, the show lifted everyone’s spirits and despite how many references were made to the rain, I think we all brightened up considerably.
