THE headbands and lycra may still appear but the garish-coloured shirts are out of the window as a group of talented youngsters bring the musical Fame up to date.

A cast aged between 11 and 18 years old from Phoenix Theatre Group will be performing the popular West End musical at Evesham Arts Centre from Thursday, October 16 to Saturday, October 18.

With a cast of 35, the show brings song and dance in a high energy version of the 1980s classic television show.

Brought up to date, it tells the story of the New York High School of Performing Arts and follows the adventures of several students who attend the High School of Performing Arts.

Among them are fame-obsessed Carmen, ambitious actress Serena, wisecracking comedian Joe, quiet, saintly violinist Schlomo, and "talented but dyslexic" dancer Tyrone.

Director Greg Clarke said: "We thought it was a good idea to bring the show up to date, as the recent professional UK tour did.

"I'm amazed at the talent we have in the group.

"It's been a very challenging production with more dance routines than we've ever done in a show, and with all of the cast under the age of 19, it's a showcase of the talented youngsters we have in and around Evesham at this time."

The Theatre Group is now entering their 25th year and group chairman, Keith Norledge, said he was really pleased the group have again brought something a bit different to the Victoria Avenue venue.

"Last year's production, We Will Rock You, really stretched us technically.

"This year, we have more complex dance routine's and singing than ever.

"Who knows what Cinderella, our 25th panto in January, will bring."

Fame - The Musicalis suitable for all ages with shows at 7.30pm as well as a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm.
