A STRING of activities have been planned as part of a moving exhibition on the First World War based on the memories and personal items of soldiers from Worcestershire.

Worcester Art Gallery and Museum will be holding an event on Saturday (November 8) to coincide with their current exhibition which commemorates the First World War.

There will be drop-in workshops people can take part in with artist Kate Brookes as well as performances by the Stringcredibles.

Music will be performed by Merrinoyse and there will be a chance to take part in a poetry workshop with Fergus the Poet.

People also have the opportunity to experience the First World War with Discover Histories.

The art gallery and museum, based on Foregate Street, has been holding the exhibition World War One in the Words of Worcestershire People since the end of October.

Letters, diaries, poems and unusual objects are all on display to build up a personal picture of the effect of the war on the people who fought and lived through it.

The exhibition is part of the Worcestershire World War One Hundred project and funded through Heritage Lottery Fund.

Visitors to Worcester Art Gallery and Museum can read and experience first-hand accounts from the front line in diaries kept by soldiers to cherished letters telling of a soldier’s bravery and bringing comfort to the families of the deceased who remained at home waiting for news.

A key events timeline is on display with a particular focus on events relevant to Worcestershire, encouraging a modern audience with no experience of conscription to consider at what point during the war they would have joined up.

World War One in the Words of Worcestershire People will run until March next year.

The exhibition is open from Monday to Saturday between 10.30am and 4.30pm.
