THE Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland and Batman's arch-enemy The Joker were just two of the characters created by young members of an amateur theatrical group in their Fantasy and Fairytale workshop.

Worcester Operatic and Dramatic Society Youth Section make-up co-ordinator Judy Hooper helped the youngsters – aged eight to 18 – make each other look like a number of fantasy character.

In the run-up to Christmas, the youth section, which has 70 members, runs a series of workshops on subjects ranging from dance, drama and singing, to make-up and backstage duties.

Mrs Hooper said: "With Fantasy and Fairytale the children were thinking about good and evil and what colours and shapes to apply for their characters, such as dark for evil and lighter for good.

"The youngsters were able to experiment and be creative with their ideas. They all seemed to enjoy the workshop."

WODYS’ chairman David Humphries said: "These workshops are an essential part of the youngsters’ theatre training.

"We are very grateful to members of our team who have given up their time to help develop WODYS members’ theatrical skills."

On Saturday, January 31, all the youngsters will be auditioning for parts in WODYS 2015 musical Annie, on at the Swan Theatre from Tuesday to Saturday, August 4 to 8.
