THE only amateur production in Europe of world-famous play Amadeus is taking place in Droitwich this month.

For six nights, the Norbury Players will be bringing Peter Shaffer’s masterpiece to the stage after becoming the only amateur group for many years to secure the rights.

Capturing the excess and indulgence of the 18th century, the rich period drama charts the lives of court composer Antonio Salieri and young prodigy Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Set in Venice, Salieri is reeling from the realisation of his own mediocrity in the face of true genius.

He swears vengeance on God by falsely befriending Mozart.

Mozart then dies neglected and impoverished while Salieri lives on in a blaze of fame and praise.

Does Salieri have blood on his hands? Did he, pushed to the edge by the monstrous prodigy, murder Mozart?

An 18th century who done it, Amadeus also challenges audiences to consider their need for genius and their fear of disappearing forever.

Cast members, costumed by Masquerade, have also visited Hanbury Hall to explore the lifestyle of the time.

Amadeus runs at the Norbury Theatre in Friar Street from Thursday, May 14 to Saturday, May 16.

It will then run again from Thursday, May 21 to Saturday 23.
