ONE of the country's leading a cappella singing groups is coming to Worcestershire to give a one-off concert in Pershore Abbey.

A spokesman said: "The Great Western Chorus from Bristol are the nine times and current UK champions at the annual convention of the British Association of Barbershop Singers and 40 or more of their chorus will be at Pershore Abbey on Saturday April 2, from 7.30pm.

"Appearing alongside them will be their hosts, the Pershore-based Vale Harmony chorus, in what's being called 'an A Cappella Extravaganza'."

The spokesman added: "It's also part of a campaign to encourage more men to sing, A free one-day workshop is being held on the same day in Pershore, led by a professional singer and members of the Great Western Chorus."

Vale Harmony's Musical Director, Mike Gearey, says: "When people hear the word 'Barbershop' they automatically think of four men in straw boaters, and tend to turn off.

"But this is not like that at all. Great Western are a spectacular, all-action chorus of male voices and choreography. Their show is amazing and to have the chance of this workshop, where you can learn from the best, is a real coup."

The workshop is at the St Andrew's Community Hall near Pershore Abbey, running from 11am to 4pm on the day.
