THE Norbury Players' next offering will be Brassed Off, which is a tale of a mining town in crisis, but with music.

Set in 1994, after years of disputes and mine closures, the axe looks set to fall on Grimley Colliery, with the loss of 1200 jobs.

The play will come to the Droitwich Spa venue from Thursday September15 to Saturday September 17 and from Thursday September 22 to Saturday September 24.

A spokesman said: "The miners' strikes in 1984 had caused friction amongst the inhabitants of the town setting family against family.

The brass band is the one thing which brings the miners together. Under the leadership of Danny, coughing with coal–dusted lungs, the band is somehow transformed into British champions with local lass Gloria, one of the band members, whipping up the money needed to get them to the Albert Hall."

The spokesman added: "This is a touching and savage account about the closing of yet another Yorkshire coal face. What happens to a community when its sole purpose for existence is suddenly taken away is what this great and terrible story is all about."

Music will be provided live by the Malvern Hills brass band.
