A FITTING tribute to a great American novelist, the late Harper Lee, is to come to The Swan Theatre in Worcester, with a stage version of the classic,"To Kill A Mockingbird".

A spokesman said: "Harper Lee, died this year, so this is a timely opportunity to revisit this fantastic novel, in her honour.

"Published in 1960, the book was an immediate success and won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction. It has become the fifth most assigned title in American schools, has been a frequent literature text in this country and has been translated into 32 languages."

The Swan Theatre Amateur Company (STAC) is presenting Christopher Sergel’s adaptation for the stage, which has become one of the most frequently performed plays in America.

The spokesman added: "The Alabama into which Harper Lee was born was steeped in bigotry. Lynch-law was still prevalent and no black person could expect to be treated as an equal of a white person, particularly if they came up against white-man’s law.

"Atticus Finch is a lawyer whose conscience drives him to defend a black man who is falsely accused of assault. The story inspires us to have the courage to speak out against injustice and prejudice of any kind. He is just an ordinary man doing an extraordinary thing. The events are seen through the eyes of his children, which adds a distinct charm to the story."

The spokesman added: "Timothy Crow has directed a number of very successful shows for the company in recent years and returns to direct this dramatic and moving play, which is still so relevant in today’s world.

The production will run at The Swan from October 4 to October 8.
