MOST historians might accept that one of England's worst ever rulers, King John, was two-faced; but a new exhibition in Worcester Cathedral gives him 48 more.

On display are the 50 successful entrants to the King John 800th portrait competition, which was launched last October.

Cathedral education officer, Sara Hayward said: "There was a great response to the competition.

"The artists really used their imaginations to capture King John’s unusual character using a wide range of art materials”.

The exhibition includes the more traditional media of oil, watercolour and acrylic as well as one unusual portrait using the science based technique of image desensitisation/visual retention.

The judges of the competition were actor Philip Leach, and artists Francesca Currie and Sara Hayward RCA. Phil will be playing lead character of King John in Shakespeare’s play, ‘King John’ which will be performed at the Cathedral from Tuesday 18th to Saturday 22nd October by Worcester Repertory Company.

Six prize winners ,three under 18 winners and three adult winners, will be announced on October 18, the 800th anniversary of King John’s death.

This free exhibition in the North Quire Aisle is open 10am to 4pm until October 27.

Sara said: "Visitors will be able to see the inspiration for the competition, King John’s effigy on his tomb nearby in the Cathedral Quire."
