A PLAY based on the life of world-famous cellist, Jacqueline Du Pre, is set to move and fascinate audiences at the Swan's Vesta Tilley audience, in Worcester.

Duet for One by Tom Kempinski is the latest offering from by the Swan Theatre Amateur Company (STAC).

Due Pre was a cellist but the plot of Duet for One concerns an eminent violinist struck down with multiple sclerosis, the same illness which ended Du Pre's live performances at the age of just 27.

A spokesman said: "The violinist takes her husband’s advice and consults psychiatrist Dr Feldmann to help her adjust to her new life which has been deprived of purpose.

"This deeply moving play unfolds as a series of their appointments, moving through conflicting moods and emotions as their relationship shifts to reveal fascinating aspects of their personalities. It is based on the fate of world-famous cellist Jacqueline Du Pre who suffered the same cruel deprivation."

The spokesman added: "A serious subject; it is true, but the play is shot through with dark humour, shocks and a surprising optimism as the main character fights to retain her dignity, pride and wicked sense of humour; she is no victim."

The show will run from June 20 to June 24.
