A SPORTS club has been gutted by fire in the early hours of this morning.

Fire crews were called to the blaze at the Stourport Sports Club in Kingsway, Stourport-on-Severn at 2.50am.

The fire, near the high school, is believed to have started in a wheelie bin full of laundry which then spread to the roof. At one point the building was 95 per cent alight.

The sports club is owned jointly by the school, Wyre Forest District Council and Sport England.

At the height of the blaze four fire crews from Bewdley, Kidderminster and Stourport were at the scene and 25 firefighters were tackling the flames.

Alec Mackie of the Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service said: "The flames spread really quickly into the roof and it took fire crews one and a half hours to bring it under control. They are dampening down as we speak."

Firefighters were still tackling the blaze at 6.30am today but it was brought under control shortly afterwards.

The cause of the fire is being treated as suspicious and one person has been arrested in connection with it.
