MPs know what’s best for the voters

SIR - With 27 countries in membership, a constitution for the European Union is inevitable.

The constitution originally proposed was too reactionary. The French and Dutch turned it down because they regarded it as a threat to their welfare states. The revised proposals do not amount to a constitution, more's the pity.

Of course, the anti-Europe brigade are calling for a referendum on whether the UK should accept such changes as are proposed.

May I point out that every four or five years we elect 650 MPs who, we hope, have the knowledge and expertise to make decisions on such matters, on our behalf. Therefore a referendum would be inappropriate.

D E MARGRETT, Worcester.

I think we are now faced with Hobsons choice.
Either being ruled by a greedy and corrupt European Union or by greedy and corrupt British members of parliament. How cxan one choose?

I wouldn't call giving away our country to foreign rule, exactly "in our best interests", would you, Mr. Margrett?

Anyway, our Constitution (which they are all studiously ignoring) says that they cannot do that - so is that treason?

You tell me!

Dear Mr, Margrett,
Did you watch any of the debates in Parliament on the EU treaty . Basically our elected MPs didnt attend these debates. All they did was turn up for the vote troop through the lobbies and with a few honourable exceptions voted exactly as they were told to do by their leader. This effectively meant one man , Gordon Brown , who didnt attend the discussions on the Treaty when it was drawn up , who hardly attended any of the debates and who didnt attend the signing ceremony made the decision for the other 59999999 British citizens. On what grounds did he do this, he had no mandate from the electorate to do so and all opinion polls showed that the vast majority of the country wanted to have a say on the subject. I discussed the subject with an MP I met earlier in the year at a conference and his ignorance about the content of the Treaty was frankly amazing!!!

As an EU politician said recently and unofficially - "..the EU Constitution was drafted and written to be understood. The new (Lisbon) Treaty was specially written NOT to be understood".

Says it all!

Somebody is "out to get us"! We shall find out exactly who, in the coming months and next few years.

Could your writer D.E.Margrett please be good enough to explain to me why we now have thousands of laws in Great Britain that are against , I'll say that again for his benefit, against, the interest of the people of Great Britain. My M.P. knows nothing about these laws being passed through the commons or he would have vetoed most of them. Please explain D.E. Margrett
