COMMENT: Excuse us, but isn’t it our money?

NOW we have heard it all. The wife of the Speaker of the House of Commons has been cleared after a complaint that she used taxpayers' money to fund taxi fares for shopping trips - because she is allowed to do it.

As unbelievable as it may sound, Michael Martin's wife Mary is given a £2,500 annual allowance to pay for taxis used when she goes grocery shopping.

So we are all paying for Mrs Martin's weekly trips to Tesco.

The more that is known about MPs' expenses and allowances, the more ridiculous the system is revealed to be. The Martins originally claimed the shopping was for official functions. During the investigation by Parliament's sleaze watchdog, however, they admitted they consumed most of the food bought. And still they are not guilty of any wrongdoing.

Meanwhile, Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg reveals that he spent more than £7,000 of taxpayers' money renovating his constituency home in Sheffield. The money was used for new carpets, curtains and light fittings among other items.

All this is happening, let us not forget, against a backdrop of the Speaker leading a High Court challenge against the detailed publication of MPs' expenses.

It is time for Parliament to take a reality check. Its systems are outmoded, outdated and out of step with the 21st century.

And somewhere along the line it might be beneficial for MPs to be reminded that this is our money they are spending.

The only form of transport that has been efficiently running for years without any problems is the Gravy Train, and once people are elected to represent the populace, this entitles them to a ticket to climb aboard! All political parties are guilty of this practise and no wonder that they are trying to hush it up from the likes of you and me, who at the end of the day pay for it all!If its all justifiable there should not be a problem with disclosing exactly who spends what, and on what? Maybe concience comes into it when constituents throughout the country are seeing food, fuel, water, and energy supply bills steadily increasing over months, not years. The NHS is failing due to lack of funds. Our military personnel are going without the best equipment, which is available, due to lack of funds. Our national transport system is totally inefficient, due to lack of funds.Where will it all end? The word Great no longer applies to Britain and its our own politicians who, over the years, have seen to that.Once elected, all proposals voiced before the elections are quickly forgotten and they do just what they like, the first thing being to feather ones own nest!!

Havent we always known there is no accountability for how they spend our money no matter what the public think. If those who have access to public money like above and also county council leader spending £1,100 on a tv set for his office where he is supposed to work were to make the same economies that the expect their employees to make to keep the services running, this country would be the better country of the politicans empty promises.

MR MIKE FOSTER TELL THAT TO YOUR PARTY LEADER AND OUR PRIME MINISTER AND SEE IF YOU CAN REALLY MAKE SOMETHING DECENT HAPPEN FOR ONCE IN YOUR POLITICAN CAREER.

Whether we like the man or not (or his wife) or his political views - and I dislike both, the fact remains that he holds one of the "Great Offices" of State and the only person that he bows to is the Monarch. I do not begrudge his wife having an allowance or an expences budget. One (in my book) can hardly expect her to go walking /taking a bus to the nearest Tesco, or even Harrod's, Harvey Nichs or Fortnum and Mason and returning with a plastic bag of pink potatoes, cooking oil, toilet rolls and a box of Danish patries etc etc. All of these stores are some distance away and apart from a small delicatessen in Victoria Street, there is really nowhere near to Westminster where they have to live, where they can do household shopping - make some allowance for them please.
What should concern us more is the type of accomodation MPs live in before they take over the job and how it seems to improve afterwards. Where does the money come from to buy such palatial abodes, ie, there was one MP/Minister who as a young man (before entering politics) had a job slightly below that of a deckhand on a tramp steamer. He now has a "residence" befitting an Admiral of the Fleet - tell me how they manage those sort of things and I can think of many other MPs who are in the same boat. Yes, they are on a gravy train which needs curbing and thoroughly auditing but what we must not do is diminish the high offices they hold by being petty and nit-picking.

I can't understand why these people, who are obviously paid good salaries, can't afford taxi fares - I do wonder what our money is going on - suppose we shall never know.

Chippie,
my thoughts exactly!Holding one of the "Great Offices" of State must yield a hefty salary so let him pay -also note from the above report that initially they claimed the shopping was for official functions but as the investigation progressed they admitted that they had consumed the majority of the food! Not a very honourable way to conduct oneself if holding such a position I would have thought?

(Is it me, or is this site "having some problems?"

Having to re-register every 20 minutes, or on re-entry to the site, is also a pain in the ....!

What's going on, Mr. Editor, please?)
