A PENSIONER says mess created by builders has left him heartbroken.

Donald Smith, aged 76, spent five hours cleaning up after contractors employed by Worcester Community Housing (WCH) began refurbishing his kitchen and bathroom.

"It's beyond my belief," said Mr Smith, close to tears. I've never seen my house so untidy. I just keep thinking about my late wife. I'm glad she's not here to see it."

Mr Smith has lived in Stallard Road, St John's, for 36 years and regularly helps neighbours fight for better services, from road surface improvements to felling of trees.

He said the mess left after the home improvement work, which began on Thursday, May 15, was diabolical. A spokeswoman for WCH said a kitchen takes 12 days on average to complete, but she could not give a completion date for Mr Smith's work.

"If I'm honest, I'm heartbroken," he said.

"I always have visitors and I had friends round on Sunday, but there was no where for them to even sit. The builders didn't even bring dust sheets. You should see the state of my floor. I was up until 8pm on Thursday cleaning up after them. They left the units outside; nails and rubbish all over the path.

"I just don't know what I've done to deserve this."

The kitchen units, including the sink, were ripped out on Thursday, forcing Mr Smith to wash up in his bathroom and unable to cook hot meals.

He has had to empty his cupboards and pile items in his front room until new units are installed.

A representative from WCH visited Mr Smith to talk through the improvement works in detail and to allay his concerns.

Head of property investment Sam Farrell said: "We understand completely that home improvement works on such a large scale can be both very stressful and very messy. We will ensure that a customer liaison officer from our partnering contractor visits the property each day to make sure Mr Smith is comfortable with the work being done.

"We have also spoken to our partnering contractor doing the work to make sure they maintain acceptable standards of cleanliness and tidiness and that they treat Mr Smith's home with the respect and care it deserves."

12 days to fit a kitchen, someone's taking the 'Michael'.

12 days to fit a Kitchen. Thats because one person brings the kitchen, then you have to wait for someone else to come and unpack it and then someone else to check it and so on and so on. There are different people to do every little thing, that is why it takes 12 days to fit a Kitchen!

I'd put up with a bit of mess for a free kitchen...

We recently "downsized" our house and needed a new kitchen.

From start of the installation to completion was exactly 7 days, one fitter on his own - it was a stressful week, but you expect some upheaval, don't you?

We also had to use the bathroom for water, etc. and we ate out at pubs in the evenings, but these days we live in our kitchens, they are the centre of the modern domestic universe!

Mr. Smith has my sympathy - been there, done that - but you say he paid nothing? Really?

Lucky man!

12 days is a long time, but he does have to expect some upheavel and disruption, and at the end of the day, he is getting a kitchen for free. Everyone knows council/Housing Association workmen get paid the same regardless of how long it takes, so they are not going to rush are they!

Yes - the way Donald Smith has described everything is exactly what happened when I installed (all by myself) my new kitchen.
What the hell does he expect.

Well i think it disgusting that the WCH thinks its okay to take that long to install a kitchen - although i notice thats not exactly what this old gentlman is complaining about - its more the mess they have left for him to deal with which is downright out of order! doesnt matter if he paid for it, wch, the queen or my local pub - the thing is that those who install kitchens should be sensitive, use dustsheets, wipe their feet at the door, etc - it doesnt take too long for them to tidy up as they go along - other ppl manage it like plumbers, electricians, builders, so why should a kitchen fitter be any different? i feel sorry for the old man and say that WCH should give the lazy so&so's a right rollicking for 'damage to others property'

Wish someone would come in and do my bathroom - they can take 14 days I don't care at least it would be nicer than the one I have which I can't afford to change despite working full time.

I agree Forskitt, but....the man who did our kitchen worked in one hell of a mess - and left most of it at the end of each day. Sawdust galore, plaster, screws, bits of water pipe, tool boxes, etc. you name it and it was left just "lying around".

Sparks, Chippies and Plumbers on the other hand, we have found to be excellent and put down dustsheets and taken great pains to sweep and clear up at the end of each day.

Maybe it's a "kitchen" thing? A breed on their own, perhaps?

perhaps you are right - kitchen fitters are exempt from basic human morals and codes! lol x
on a serious note though, why can't they just tidy as they work, the rest of us do, whether we teachers, cleaners, mechanics, etc - can you imagine what would happen if a person who demolishes a building doesnt have some form of tidy up policy so that others can get on with the next job. its just inconsiderate and rude - even if they just tidied up and took the bigger items of rubbish to be recycled it would of helped.

One needs take into consideration ones perception of a "mess".
What is a mess to some people may only be a bit of clutter to others. Are there any pictures of this "mess".

Thats the point i'm trying to say ex-worc! other people manage it so its not good enough, whether its an older gentleman as in this case, or a young family, common curteousy costs nothing.
(sorry for tarring all with the same brush, it happened to my pops too you see so i feel a bit strongly about it x)

Was a complaint about the untidiness directed towards the correct person in the first place? Only if they get no satisfaction should the newspaper be contacted. Otherwise, expect distruption, you get it whether you have a free kitchen or have to pay for it. Get real.
If you let someone walk away leaving a mess, you deserve it. Do what your late wife would have done and get on and clear it up if you allow them to make a mess.
The majority of older people can be quite verbous, direct it to the right person.
