AN UNDERCOVER operation to ensure fireworks were not being sold to children has been a success.

Last Friday, children attempted to buy fireworks in 24 premises across Worcestershire. On each occasion the under 18-year-olds, who were accompained by Trading Standards officers, were turned away and told they were not old enough.

The shops - two in Worcester, six in Kidderminster, five in Stourport, six in Redditch, and four in Bromsgrove - were targeted after they were identified as being close to places where fireworks were misused.

The maximum penalty for selling fireworks to youngsters is a fine of £5,000 and six months in prison.

Enforcement officer Tracey Blanchard said: "These results are very pleasing and show that retailers are taking their responsibilities seriously and refusing to sell fireworks to children.

"By preventing sales of fireworks to children you reduce the risk of anti-social use of fireworks which could result in serious injury or damage to property."
