Police CS spray drunken man in face on his birthday
A MAN had a “birthday to remember” when he was sprayed in the face with CS spray and ended up in police cells, a court was told.
Lee Wood, of Nibley Close, Worcester, pleaded guilty to being drunk and disorderly and resisting arrest at Worcester Magistrates Court.
Matt Dodson, prosecuting, said Wood had attempted to buy cider from Tesco Express, Foregate Street, on Tuesday, October 16, but was told he was too drunk to be served.
The court was told he became agitated and started swearing at the deputy manager before being escorted from the store.
The 23-year-old made several attempts to re-enter and the police were called. Officers tried to get him to leave and despite being given warnings about his language and behaviour he became more erratic and was arrested.
Wood was initially compliant but when he arrived at the police vehicle he began clenching his fist and tried to break their grip. Police sprayed him in the face with CS spray and Wood was restrained.
Barry Newton, defending, said: “October 16 was Mr Wood’s 23rd birthday and on the evening he was celebrating and regrettably had drunk too much and behaved stupidly and foolishly.
“He accepts he shouldn’t have behaved as he did and if he had a sober head on him he would have gone elsewhere.
“It was a birthday to remember as he was in custody overnight and sprayed with CS spray for his troubles.”
Wood was fined £80 for being drunk and disorderly, £80 for obstructing a police officer, £85 costs and a £20 victim surcharge.
Fining him, chairman Gerald Heath said: “You realise this will be an expensive birthday and if you are going to continue doing this things are going to get worse.”
