YELLOW lines could be painted on roads in a residential area of Worcester in a continuing crackdown on student parking problems around the university’s main city campus.

In the latest stage of an on-going review of parking in St John’s, and particularly around the University of Worcester campus, Worcestershire County Council has revealed proposals to control parking in the area after consultations with the university and residents.

Councillor Simon Geraghty said a formal 28-day consultation was now running for people to raise any objections.

Eighteen months ago, new parking controls wereintroduced in roads surrounding the Henwick Road campus because students were parking in the residential streets – to the annoyance of householders.

The problem is particularly acute at the start of the new academic year, said Coun Geraghty.

The latest stage of changes are now proposed, with Lodge Close, Andrew Close and The Mead set to receive single yellow lines limiting waiting on one side of the road, with an additional waiting zone in The Mead to accommodate use of the community centre.

In Nuffield Close, it is proposed to lengthen existing double yellow lines to include the corners of the close – which has an S-bend layout, and where parked cars can cause problems with access.

Coun Geraghty said: “Having worked on this for the last two years, this process has been about achieving a balance between competing needs in the area but also providing some parking for visitors and people who need to be there for more than a few minutes.”

He said plans to tackle parking in nearby King Arthur’s Close and Himbleton Road would follow in a month’s time.
