THE new St Richard's Hospice at Spetchley, near Worcester, is a haven of loving care, according to one of the first patients to be welcomed into the new in-patient unit.

Kristine Judd, aged 59, from Crossway Green, near Hartlebury, is singing the praises of the new £5.25m hospice which opened in mid October. "I'm just in awe - so impressed with everything in the new hospice, it's an absolute delight," said Kristine, who is undergoing care for cancer.

Kristine had been looked after by one of the St Richard's specialist home care nurses before coming to into the unit for further specialist treatment.

She added: "When people say hospice they tend to think it's the end - but it's not necessarily. There is tender, loving care to get you back up on your feet again.

"It's very much a home from home and everything has been thought of for the patients from the beds to the brilliant food.

"Nothing is too much trouble. The staff have got time to talk to you and listen which makes such a big difference. They also respect a patient's dignity."

During her stay, Kristine has also had advice and treatment from a lymphoedema nurse and physiotherapist as well as having her hair cut in the onsite salon.

She is staying in a single room with ensuite facilities and access to a private patio area overlooking the gardens. There are now 100 full and part-time staff working at the hospice supported by about 700 volunteers.

As well as the new in-patient unit, St Richard's includes a day hospice, home care team and counselling and bereavement support.
