A PERSHORE man completed a half-marathon in memory of his late wife and raised money for a new breast unit in Worcester.

Geraint Roberts, of Lower Moor, ran the Cardiff half marathon in aid of the Worcestershire Breast Unit Campaign, the charity he chose following the death of his wife Lynda from the disease in March 2010.

Mr Roberts completed the course in just under two-and-a-half hours and was cheered on by his children.

Also encouraging him was a friend, Marie McNally, who ran the half marathon with him raising funds for a children’s charity.

He has so far raised more than £300 for the £1.8 million Worcestershire Breast Unit Campaign in Lynda’s memory.

Your Worcester News has supported the breast unit campaign since it was launched in October 2009.

The campaign aims to create a one-stop shop for all breast care patients at 220 Newtown Road near Worcestershire Royal Hospital in Worcester.

Mr Roberts said: “When my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer we spent a lot of time at the hospital and I would like, in a very small way, to help other families.

“None of us can bring a complete solution to cancer and the pain it causes but we can all try and play a small part in the journey to finding a cure and to helping those fighting it.

“People have been so generous and I have been really pleased by the support. I am planning to raise more funds next year by organising a coast-to-coast bike ride.

I am recruiting friends to get involved, some voluntarily, some not.”
