ANGRY residents have spoken out about the nightmare parking situation near the University of Worcester.

Homeowners in Henwick Road, St John's, are fed up with people parking their cars on the pavement, blocking driveways and making the street dangerous to drive in.

Zelma and Percy Young, who live near the Severn Gate entrance to the University on Henwick Road, say the problem is worse this year.

The couple, who are both disabled, are outraged that people repeatedly park outside their house and make it impossible for them to get their motorised scooters out the front door.

On Wednesday they had to call the police and a car parked in the disabled-only bay outside their house was issued an £80 fine.

Mrs Young, aged 83, said: "They should park on their own college ground. The only reason they don't is because they have to pay to.

"But if they can afford to run a car, they can afford to park it and if you saw some of the cars you'd know that they're not hard up."

Mr Young, aged 89, said the Henwick Road/Hylton Road junction was already dangerous without cars being parked everywhere.

"It's getting worse," he said, "More than once I've had to fetch the police."

The couple's son Tim, who lives with and cares for his parents, said: "If I see them parking up outside I ask them politely to move. If they say no, I ask them less politely.

"So far we've been lucky with the students that live next door but it is definitely getting worse."

Another resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "They park on the pavement and nobody can get past. "They create a hazard and you can see just how congested the road gets anyway.

"They have no consideration for the people who live here. They don't park their cars, they abandon them."

The other entrance to the university is on Oldbury Road. Richard Janes, who lives directly opposite the Malvern Gate, said: "It's not really a problem for us. Some students do park silly further up the road but it doesn't directly affect us."

Simon Geraghty, ward councillor, said he was aware of the problem on Henwick Road.

"The problem is there isn't enough parking within the area to accommodate the people who want to come to the university. I absolutely understand the residents' concern and we are working to assess the situation," he said.

The university was unavailable for comment as the Worcester News went to press.
