A WOMAN who was involved in a collision with a car on a Worcester road has died.

Now outraged councillors and angry residents have called for traffic calming measures to be introduced on Windermere Drive, Warndon.

The woman, whose identity has not been revealed, was in collision with a blue Fiat Bravo in Windermere Drive, near Sainsbury's supermarket, at about 6.30pm on Friday, October 27.

She died at about 12.10pm in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham, on Thursday. She had been in a critical condition since the collision. The motorist suffered no injuries.

City councillor for Warndon Pamela Clayton said: "These accidents have been going on and on and on. I'm cross because for years I have been campaigning along with John Buckley and Jo Hodges for a pedestrian crossing there.

We have tried very hard to get it and I ultimately believe we will get it. I believe it's going to be done as a part of the Sainsbury's move (to the former Archdales site) but that doesn't help the poor lass and all the others that have been hurt."

County Councillor John Buckley said: "There have been concerns about the speed of traffic and people crossing the road in that area and now that this has happened it has really highlighted our concerns. This (trying to get a pedestrian crossing) has been going on for some five years and now that somebody has been killed where are we?"

Coun Clayton said that she had enquired about a speed camera but was told the average speed along the road was not high enough and that there had not been enough collisions there in recent years.

Meanwhile, Emma Jones, who lives in Drapers Close, said: "It was only a matter of time before something like this was going to happen.

"The bus stop causes a blind spot. I have heard they won't put any speed bumps in because of the lorries going to Sainsbury's. I think it's disgusting. It seems Sainsbury's is more important than people's safety."

A spokesman for West Mercia Safety Camera Partnership said, due to guidelines and rules in place, it cannot erect speed cameras until it is approached by the county council.

Dave Clee, the county council's accident studies senior engineer, confirmed a pedestrian crossing will be provided on Windermere Drive as part of the redevelopment of Sainsbury's superstore.

A Sainsbury's spokeswoman said it welcomed traffic calming measures.

An inquest into the woman's death is expected to be opened and adjourned at Stourport-on-Severn on Tuesday, November 7.

Police are urging anyone who saw the incident to call 08457 444888, quoting 589S/271005.
