IT seems the Severn seal is planning to stay at her new home for a little longer.

Eagle-eyed Roger Huffadine snapped the common seal checking out mooring details at the Ketch Caravan Park in Worcester yesterday lunchtime.

She scrambled up onto the riverbank to take some time out from the Severn’s choppy waters before returning and playing with a discarded plastic bottle.

It also appears Keith – who was named after a Royalist commander who served during the English Civil War, although it is now thought she is a female – has been in the area longer than previously thought.

Richard Rawlings, the caravan park’s manager, first spotted her bobbing about in the river four months ago.

He said: “This is the first time she has been seen out of the water here. She was out for about 20 minutes, found a bottle, went back in and started playing with that. She’s a little character.”

Yesterday we reported how the Angling Trust was concerned the seal was having a “devastating effect” on the river’s ecosystem and fish stocks.

Mr Rawlings said none of his residents who regularly fished the river had noticed any affect on fish stocks “The seal has got 16 miles of river to feed from,” he said. “From what I’ve gathered, the fishing has only improved."
