FIREFIGHTERS have tackled three chimney fires in only 24 hours as homeowners are warned to keep their chimneys clean.

The first of the fires was at a 500-year-old cottage in Little Hereford, near Tenbury Wells, at 11.45am on Tuesday.

The fire involved a woodburner and two fire crews from Tenbury Wells plus the aerial ladder platform from Hereford were used.

Meanwhile, Stourport-on-Severn firefighters attended a chimney fire at a home in Holly Road at 2.35pm on Tuesday.

A third fire happened at 3.55am yesterday morning when a crew from Tenbury assisted colleagues from Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service at a chimney fire in Greete, near Ludlow.

Station commander Alan Haley, of Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service’s community safety department, said: “Chimney fires have the potential to be very serious but many can be avoided simply by ensuring regular cleaning and maintenance.”

He advised that chimneys are swept regularly by an approved chimney sweep. A full list of sweeps is available at hwfire.org.uk under latest campaigns/chimney safety.
