DROITWICH Spa High School has made major improvements in all areas, according to Ofsted inspectors.
The school, based in Briar Mill, was rated as ‘inadequate’ by a report last year.
An inspection in November 2011 said that the school had been given notice to improve the progress made by all groups of students, particularly in mathematics.
It said development made by pupils had been too slow and highlighted the same problem for students with special educational needs or disabilities.
However, a year on, the school has now been judged to be a category two school and rated as ‘good’ overall.
Five Ofsted inspectors visited on November 21 and 22 before judging a host of different areas. They reported the achievement of pupils, quality of teaching, and behaviour of pupils are all ‘good’ and that the leadership and management is ‘excellent’.
The report also singled out for praise the particularly strong improvements made in the maths and science departments.
Headteacher Natalie Waters said: “I am delighted that this report recognises the great strides forward made by Droitwich Spa High School over the past year.
“Ofsted acknowledges the contributions made by the entire school community, not least by the students themselves and their parents. We are all looking forward to continuing to move ahead over the coming year.
“Moving ahead means developing into an ‘outstanding’ school. The inspectors noted that many initiatives are in place that will allow this to happen but which need more time.”
Mid-Worcestershire MP Peter Luff has written to the headteacher to congratulate her and her staff.
In the letter to Mrs Waters, Mr Luff wrote: “It is a dramatic improvement to move from ‘inadequate’ to ‘good’ and it is a testament to the hard work of you and your team.
“I know this report will do a great deal to reassure parents of your pupils about the very high standard of teaching at your school and I know that the school will continue to go from strength to strength.”
Commenting on the good news, Mr Luff said: “I always thought the original report was too harsh and this reassessment of the school is much closer to the reality I have encountered.
“Nevertheless, I know that the management team accepted that improvements were needed and this report shows sparkling success. This latest assessment is a real Christmas present, but one that has been hard won by all the staff.”
