THESE cute canines were among hundreds hoping to become prize-winning pooches at an annual dog show in Worcestershire.

A total of 720 dogs of all shapes, sizes and breeds travelled the length and breadth of the country to take part in the Worcester and Malvern Dog Show.

Hilary Norbury, secretary of the Worcester and Malvern Canine Society, said Saturday’s extravaganza at The Three Counties Showground in Malvern had once again proved popular.

“It’s a very friendly affair,” she said.

“We don’t charge members of the public to come in – we like them to come and see all the breeds together.”

Paula Purnell had travelled from Cardiff with her golden retriever puppy, Saffie, aged 10-and-a-half months. She won first place in the puppy category for her breed, and came second in the junior category.

“She’s been in several shows but this is her first place, so we’re pleased with that,” she said. “To get ready she normally has a bath before most shows and it takes an hour to trim her.

“We’ve done the Worcester and Malvern show before, it’s worth coming for – she’ll get a treat later for coming first.”

The winner of best in show was a Siberian husky named Winter Melody Hot on the Top at Amical, which had been imported from Poland, while the best puppy in show was a French bulldog called Jafrak Friendly Persuasion.

Mrs Norbury said: “The whole day went very well.

“Everything went very smoothly and several people came up to me at the end to say how well run it was.”

Competitors came from far and wide including Essex, Derbyshire and south Wales despite overall numbers being slightly down on last year’s 800.
All entries had to be registered with The Kennel Club.
