CHRISTMAS trees can be recycled at four different places in Worcester but people only have until Sunday to use the service.

Skips have been provided at four sites across the city since December 30 for people to recycle their trees.

Worcester City Council was the first in the UK to offer tree recycling facilities, introducing the service in 1991. Nearly five-and-a-half tonnes of Christmas trees were recycled by the council last year – about 3,000 trees in total. Trees can be recycled at the following locations: Household Waste Recycling Centre, Bilford Road Open Monday to Saturday, 8am to 6pm, and on Sunday, 10am to 4pm.

Blooms Worcester Garden Centre, Droitwich Road Access at all times All tree decorations should be removed from trees first. They will be taken to the composting facility at Throckmorton, where they will be shredded and composted before being turned into a soil conditioner which can be returned to the garden.

Warwick Neale, team manager at Worcester City Council said: “The scheme has become a great success, with the number of residents recycling trees increasing ever year. Of course, if householders have a shredder they can also chip their own trees. The chippings can be mixed in with compost or spread thinly on to flower or vegetable beds.”
