COME with us back through the years to a sunny summer day in the early 1950s when a photographer went along to George’s Yard, a little court of houses behind Greyfriars in the centre of Worcester, to take some pictures of its last residents.

The resulting evocative images recently resurfaced after more than half a century and have set the National Trust on a search to find out more about the people featured in them.

Greyfriars, now a trust property which fronts Friar Street, dates back to 1480, but the lovely garden at the rear was only created 60 years ago when George’s Yard was demolished and the residents re-housed.

House and visitor services manager Rachael Trimm said: “Greyfriars is a house of mysteries.

“Some of the many cupboards and chests are full of papers that are only now being brought to light and several photographs were found during the recent house clean, including these. “Are you related to any of the people smiling back at us from that summer’s day in the 1950s? The National Trust is launching a social history project to find out more about life in George’s Yard, so if you recognise any of the people in these photographs, they’d love to hear from you.

“We are keen to extend the story we tell at Greyfriars with a display about George’s Yard.

“Our volunteers have worked hard, looking through electoral rolls and census records but now we need local memories of the houses to help us build a more complete picture.

“We were really excited to stumble across these old photographs and we hope they could be the key to help us unlock some of the personal stories about George’s Yard.”

Miss Trimm and her team at Greyfriars can be contacted on 01905 23571. Alternatively, anyone with memories or records relating to George’s Yard can e-mail greyfriars@nationaltrust.org.uk.

Greyfriars house and garden will be re-opening for the new season on Tuesday, February 19, then every Tuesday to Saturday, from 1pm-5pm (last entry 4.30pm) and will remain open until December 21.
