Pancake race off as appeal for entries falls flat
2:55pm Thursday 7th February 2013 in News By Tarik Al Rasheed
Worcester's Rotary pancake race is off but Malvern's event is still going ahead
PLANS for a fund-raising pancake race outside Worcester’s Guildhall on Saturday have had to be tossed out because not enough people wanted to take part.
Worcester South Rotary Club had moved the annual event to a Saturday from its traditional Shrove Tuesday slot for the first time in its eight-year history in a bid to attract more families and local clubs to take part.
The mayor of Worcester, Roger Berry, was signed up to take part and charities including Acorns Children’s Hospice, Maggs Day Centre and St Richard’s Hospice were set to benefit.
However disappointed Rotarian David Scott said they had been left with no choice but to cancel after their best efforts to attract participants fell flat.
“I'm afraid we have just not been able to get enough entries to make the event viable,” he said.
For anyone who had been hoping to take part, a pancake race organised by neighbouring Malvern Rotary Club is still set to go ahead.
The event, now in its sixth year, is taking place in Priory Park, Malvern, between 12.30-2pm on Tuesday, February 19. A separate race especially for toddlers is taking place at the same venue at 11.30am.
Anyone interested in entering can call 01684 575879.
